Do you have Nightfall? If not, get Nightfall.

If you do, click here It's a start.

You need the Nightfall campaign. Then, simply play the game. You get your first hero within an hour unless you goof around and do nothing. You'd probably have more fun figuring it out for yourself than if someone tells you everything that'll happen in the game. Don't worry, you'll get your hero (and plenty of them) as you play, you can't really avoid it.

You do not have to have Nightfall to get a hero. You're just very, very limited on what you get. If you have Prophecies, you can get Olias (Lion's Arch). If you have Factions, you can get Zenmai (Kaineng Center).
